Stone & Form 1 continues the artist’s evolving engagement with the boundary between human and sculptural form. Following the explorations of Untitled Series 1, where the human body was rendered with the illusion of carved stone, this series inverts the premise—photographing actual stone figures with the sensitivity typically reserved for the living body.
Shot in a cemetery near the artist’s home, the images isolate fragments of marble statuary: crossed arms, delicately modeled hands, folds of drapery. Cropped tightly and rendered in digitally refined black and white, the photographs emphasize texture and gesture over full form. Weathering, dirt, and lichen appear like scars or pores—details that breathe humanity into stone.
The compositions are restrained, focusing on touch, tension, and stillness. They invite a quiet empathy, encouraging the viewer to consider how intimacy, mourning, and memory are inscribed into material form. In these images, carved figures take on a corporeal presence, blurring the distinction between body and monument, artifice and affect.
Though never completed as a full series, these images represent a turning point in the artist’s photographic inquiry—shifting from stylized transformation to a direct meditation on the sculptural presence of absence.
Digitally refined proofs from the unfinished project Stone & Form 1. These test images represent a work in progress and were never part of a finalized edition.
